Foreign nationals working at a workplace covered by Korea's National Health Insurance are generally enrolled as employee subscribers. For many registered foreign residents who are not covered through a job, mandatory self-employed enrollment begins after a stay of more than six months, subject to visa and exemption rules.
Foreign subscribers receive the same categories of health-insurance benefits as Korean citizens, including coverage for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, childbirth, and health promotion. Contributions and household treatment can differ according to income, assets, visa status, and documented family relationships.
The National Health Insurance Service operates dedicated foreign-resident centers and provides English guidance and multilingual health-checkup forms. Residents with overseas coverage or special employer arrangements should not assume they are exempt; an exemption normally requires an application and supporting evidence.
