I was teaching myself by studying out of grammar books and cards for vocabulary. It took probably about half a year to be able to speak confidently and understand the general concepts of the conversation. I still struggled to understand TV shows and old people talking. It was definitely a slow process and that first year was very frustrating. You are full of sound advice.
