English teacher needed for academy near Hanti station. Petra English is searching for an instructor to begin full-time work beginning November 3rd, 2012. Duties include an ability to teach a wide range of students from elementary beginner level up to SAT preparation and academic writing for high school age students. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate this ability.
Job Description
ATTENTION: TOP QUALITY ENGLISH TEACHING JOB OPENING
Job Description: F class visa or E2 visa holding English teacher with at least 3 years experience sought for Petra English Academy in the Daechi-dong neighborhood of Gangnam near Hanti Station(Yellow line). Applicants must be able to instruct a wide range of students from lower-level elementary to high school. Lessons include but are not limited to: reading, writing, speaking, test preparation, novels, academic essays, IBT Toefl, SAT prep, conversation development, etc. All lessons must be planned and prepared by the instructor independently each day before lessons begin.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate valuable teaching skills, flexibility, assertiveness, independence, and maturity. Additionally, ideal applicants will be willing to sign a 2-3 year contract. Contract length is flexible; however, a minimum one-year contract is compulsory. Applicants willing to sign a 2-3 year contract will receive vacation benefits of one week a year following the first completed year of the contract. Otherwise, all national Korean holidays (red days) are observed.
Schedule: The work week is Monday through Friday with flexible hours depending on the lessons scheduled for that particular day. There are no strictly set work hours. The instructor will be trusted to prepare for and perform his/her duties independently. On rare occasions, Saturday lessons may be requested.
Compensation: Base rate for the position is 3 million won per month. Additionally, there is a commission-based pay policy that surpasses the base rate once the students’ tuition total rises above the base rate.
Start date: The position will begin Monday, November 3rd. There will be a period of classroom observation during the month of October. The hired applicant will be required to observe each day of the week once throughout said month.
Applicants should send resumes by email ONLY to salikas@hanmail.net. Interviews will be conducted throughout the month of September. Please, no phone calls regarding the position.
Current teacher comments: My name is Zachary Scott. I am an American teacher with a degree in English Writing who has been living and working in Korea for the past five years. During my time here, I have worked for a number of different academies, both small-scale as well as large corporations. Throughout my experiences in Seoul, I have never taught for a company that is as focused on actually educating and improving each student’s abilities. Along with that, this position requires a focused and mature instructor who not only has teaching experience, but can also manage their time properly. The other instructors who work at this academy are highly educated Korea University graduates who are focused on the success of their own students. As a result, the hired teacher will not be strictly observed and scrutinized like they would be at another academy. The teacher will be trusted to perform their tasks independently and in a high-quality way.
Along with the independence of the position comes the benefits of the pay scale that Petra offers. Unlike most other academies in Korea, Petra has an extremely straight-forward policy in regards to compensation. The pay system used here is more customized for an applicant who is interested in remaining in Korea long-term. It would be ideal for an applicant who hopes to remain in Korea to teach as a career. Because of this, stipulations like plane tickets, housing, health insurance, and pension are left out of the contract. However, these are more than made up for by the pay scale that the academy employs. For example, during my time here I have only received the base rate once. All other months, my salary has surpassed the 3 million monthly rate. During the busy months, I have been lucky enough to earn over 6 million won. So, you can see how the pay scale more than makes up for the straight-forward nature of the contract.
Furthermore, the working conditions of this academy are very friendly and comfortable. Personally, I would not be leaving the position if not for my family’s plan to return to the states this winter. I would personally highly recommend this position for the ideal applicant.
