# Comments from a Former Employee:
1. Teacher(USA) who worked in 2014:
I am an American teacher with a degree in English Writing who has been living and working in Korea for the past five years. During my time here, I have worked for a number of different academies, both small-scale as well as large corporations. Throughout my experiences in Seoul, I have never taught for a company that is as focused on actually educating and improving each student's abilities. Along with that, this position requires a focused and mature instructor who not only has teaching experience, but can also manage their time properly. As a result, the hired teacher will not be strictly observed and scrutinized like they would be at another academy. The teacher will be trusted to perform their tasks independently and in a high-quality way.
Along with the independence of the position comes the benefits of the pay scale that Petra offers. Unlike most other academies in Korea, Petra has an extremely straight-forward policy in regards to compensation. The pay system used here is more customized for an applicant who is interested in remaining in Korea long-term. It would be ideal for an applicant who hopes to remain in Korea to teach as a career. The pay scale that the academy employs is really motivating. For example, during my time here I have only received the base rate once. All other months, my salary has surpassed the 3 million monthly rate. During the busy months, I have been lucky enough to earn over 6 million won. So, you can see how the pay scale more than makes up for the straight-forward nature of the contract.
Furthermore, the working conditions of this academy are very friendly and comfortable. Personally, I would not be leaving the position if not for my family's plan to return to the states this winter. I would personally highly recommend this position for the ideal applicant.
2. Current Teacher(USA):
"Wanted: A talented, dedicated English language teacher who loves to teach and has a heart for K-12 children."
Before I begin my testimonial about Petra English, I want to honestly share as to why I am leaving and why we are in need of a dedicated teacher here at Petra. First, I returned from Hong Kong on a work assignment because I missed teaching. A few weeks into my tenure, I experienced a lot of pain in my left eye and went to an ophthalmologist at Soonchunhyang Hospital. The tests & consultations left me in a state of incredible shock: the possibility of losing my sight. During my 5 weeks of teaching/training, I have received nothing but love, support, and humor from my director and my brilliant colleagues.
I have to say that it is incredibly sad to leave this place because the students are hungry for a teacher who is not only talented but one that can also mentor. I have been incredibly blessed by my experience thus far and another reason as to why I do not want to leave is because of the compensation and flexibility of hours. Here's the breakdown of a 12 month-span below:
Slow Months(4 months): 17-20 Hrs a week (Teaching): Guaranteed monthly compensation: 2.5-3M
Medium Months(4 months): 20-30 Hours a week (Teaching): 3-4M (Historical Avg.)
Peak Months(4 months): 30-40 Hours a week (Teaching): 4-6M (Summer/Winter)
The director expects the instructor should be able to teach from Kindy to SATs (Verbal) & some AP-level coursework (English, History, Gov't, etc.)
I strongly advise that you apply and send in your CV only if you can and have experience teaching at this level.
Best Regards,
